"NOAA's 8 to 14-day forecast shows warmer-than-normal temperatures across the East Coast and parts of the Central US, which would drive weaker weather-driven demand and create looser markets," Victoria Dircksen at Schneider Electric says in a note. Prices are headed for a seventh consecutive weekly decline, and are down 47% year-to-date and are 66% lower since Dec. 15, when the selloff began.

Shares of Newmont Corp. (NEM) dropped 6.1% in premarket trading Monday, after the gold miner confirmed that it made a bid to buy Australia-based Newcrest Mining Ltd., in proposed stock deal. That was enough to make Newmont's stock the biggest percentage decliner ahead of the open. Based on Newcrest's Australia-listed shares , the gold miner was valued at $21.92 billion, according to FactSet. Newmont said it's bid to merge with Newcrest is based on 0.380 Newmont shares per Newcrest share, which based on Friday's closing price would be about $18.94, or 25.2% above the Friday's close of the U.S.-listed shares (NCM.AU) of Newcrest Mining. ""We believe a combination of Newmont and Newcrest presents a powerful value proposition to our respective shareholders, workforce and the communities in which we operate," Newmont Chief Executive Tom Palmer said. Newmont's stock has rallied 21.6% over the past three months through Friday, while gold futures have climbed 12.4% and the S&P 500 has advanced 9.7%.

By Robb M. Stewart Galiano Gold Inc. said Monday that two contractors were fatally injured in an incident at its co-owned Asanko gold mine in Ghana. Emergency services responded to the incident near the mine-waste storage facility where the two contractors were pronounced dead at the scene, the mining company said. The appropriate authorities have been notified and an investigation is underway, and Galiano said it is working alongside its contractor to ensure everyone impacted by the incident is provided the required support and counseling. Asanko, a joint venture equally owned with South Africa's Gold Fields Ltd., is managed and operated by Galiano. Last month, Galiano said the mine reported no total recordable injuries and no lost-time injuries in the fourth quarter. Gold production for last year hit 170,342 troy ounces, ahead of the company's original guidance for 100,000 to 120,000 ounces.

"Weather has [also] had a material effect ... Exceptionally mild weather has already averted the worst of an 'Energy Crisis' for this winter." The reality, it concludes, is "these factors have driven a loosening in market balances (broadly), but we continue to see markets tightening throughout 2023."

Gold is up about 14% since November, triggered by previous overselling of the metal and market expectations with US rate rises seen nearing completion and a weakening dollar, Jakusconek says. History shows bullion has reached premiums topping $400/oz, about 22% of the spot price, in 2020, and greater than $600/oz, about 40% of spot, during the financial crisis, with premiums extending for significant periods. Jakusconek notes currently gold is trading at a $75/oz, or 4% of spot, premium vs the historical eight-year average of $52/oz.

1530 GMT - Gold miner Newmont's roughly $17B offer to acquire Australia's Newcrest Mining won't be challenged by one of its biggest competitors. Mark Bristow, chief executive of Barrick Gold, says on the sidelines of an industry conference in Cape Town, South Africa that he wouldn't make a rival bid for Newcrest. "The market is starting to suffer from its lack of investment in its own future," he says. "The logic [of the deal] doesn't seem to fit too well." The gold industry has been struggling in recent years to make large new discoveries of the precious metal. 0834 ET - Aluminum prices are showing little reaction to a Bloomberg article stating that the Biden Administration is planning to levy a 200% tariff on Russian-produced aluminum, with traders downplaying the effect on available US supply Russia's absence may have. "Many US firms have already cut back on Russian purchases," says Edward Meir of Marex in a note. The US has been publicly considering action against Russia via its aluminum exports at least as far back as last year, and US markets appear to have been preparing for such action. "This is not 2018, when the reaction to the tariffs was far more intense," says Meir. The 90-day forward contract for aluminum on the LME is down 0.9%.

1438 GMT - LME metal prices closed lower on Tuesday, as a stronger dollar clipped sentiment for base metals. Cash copper prices closed 0.3% lower at $8,863.85 a metric ton while nickel fell 2.3% to $26,807 a ton. futures meanwhile are up 0.1% to $1,881 a troy ounce. "Base metals [are] not having a particularly good start to February," Ed Meir, president of Commodity Research Group says in a note, pointing to zinc losing three quarters of the 16% it gained through January, with nickel and tin also struggling. Meir also notes copper was at a four week low while talk of an aluminum tariff from the U.S. on Russian products has largely been ignored.

Lithium Americas Shares Rally After Favorable Court Ruling for Thacker Pass

Lithium Americas Corp.'s shares jumped Tuesday after a federal court affirmed a permit for the company's Thacker Pass lithium project in Nevada, freeing it to begin construction. In morning trading, the shares were 9.1% higher at C$34.40, extending the run higher so far this year to 34%. Lithium Americas said the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada declined to vacate the federal decision to approve the Thacker Pass project, and rejected claims the project would cause unnecessary harm to the environment or wildlife. Still, the court ordered the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to consider one issue under mining law relating to the area designated for waste storage and tailings, though the company said the court didn't impose any restrictions that are expected to affect the construction timeline. The court ruling recognizes the Bureau of Land Management's decision to issue a federal permit, leaving place the final regulatory approval needed to move Thacker Pass into construction, President and Chief Executive Jonathan Evans said. The court rejected arguments that the project will cause unnecessary and undue degradation to the local sage grouse population and habitat, groundwater aquifers and air quality, that the land management bureau failed to adequately consider the project's impacts to culturally or religiously significant areas, and that the bureau acted unreasonably or in bad faith in identifying tribes for consultation before approving the project, the company said. The project in Humbolt County, Nevada, would see the construction of an open-pit mine that the company projects will initially produce 40,000 metric tons of battery-quality lithium carbonate annually, ramping up to 80,000 tons a year. Late last month, General Motors Co. agreed to make a $650 million investment in Lithium Americas in an effort to secure supplies of lithium, a vital commodity used for batteries that power electric cars. Lithium Americas said the funds will help support the development of Thacker Pass and the company's plans to separate by creating the foundation for an independent U.S. business.
