A Time for Caution

Nothing goes straight up and nothing goes straight down. As edifying as it is to see silver and gold go up almost every day, now and again all markets take a breather.

I run a gold site and it's considered heresy to suggest commodities correct but they do. Even the lowly dollar goes in the opposite direction on occasions.

Gold has been on a tear since mid-August when the very real damage to the world's financial system started to rear its ugly head. The damage is hardly complete, indeed we will see the banking system fail worldwide before we are through but now would be a good time to pull in our horns.

Gold was $650 in mid-August and almost made its way to $1,000 a couple of days ago. Silver managed a climb from $11.75 to over $20 in the same time frame. Those are insurance policies, 50% moves are pretty unusual. There will be more upcoming but a nice violent correction would set the stage for higher prices after a typical May-June bottom.

When you think of the utter non-entities running for President of the United States, it's hard to envision much of a future for the dollar; face it, the country is bankrupt in every way and fashion. But when everyone climbs on one side of a trade, the market almost always does the opposite.

The junior golds haven't even recovered from their mauling in August. I remained convinced that they will provide the only safe harbor when the banking system shuts down. But if you have some nice gains, now would be a good time to sweep some profit off the table.

Gold, silver and the dollar are all at almost record levels of sentiment. Bullish for silver and gold, bearish for the dollar. That's when markets turn. You have been warned.

Beryllium and You
By Byron King

One of the lessons of World War II was the vulnerability of international trade. The Germans almost starved Britain with submarine attacks on British and Allied shipping. And the U.S. broke the back of the Japanese economy by sinking over 90% of the Japanese merchant fleet.

So during the Cold War, from the 1940s to the 1980s, the U.S. government was pretty worried about keeping the national economy running in case of a war with the Soviet Union. Thus the U.S. government built up what it called a "strategic stockpile."

This stockpile contained large quantities of metals, minerals, fuel and other critical commodities. Military planners believed these things were essential for national security. So the government just plain hoarded up metals and minerals in warehouses, and open camps out in the desert.

It was like a squirrel stocking up on food for a long winter. The stockpile included all sorts of things. There was helium and indium, chrome and cobalt, germanium and beryllium, diamonds, molybdenum and much more. This constituted the U.S. "war reserve."

In hindsight, it is fair to say that the planners had their basic facts straight. The items in the stockpile were – and remain – the backbone of a modern industrial economy. Without these metals and minerals, you can hardly keep the lights on, let alone build advanced systems like power plants, or war machines like jet aircraft and submarines.

But the Cold War ended in the early 1990s. So in the post-Cold War euphoria of the 1990s and early 2000s the U.S. government sold off almost all of the strategic stockpile material. (The Russians sold a lot as well, but not all of it – characteristically.) So today, the U.S. strategic stockpile is gone. The warehouses are empty. Heck, the U.S. government even sold off many of the warehouses.

Selling the stockpile did raise a bit of cash for the federal coffers, but it also produced some unintended consequences out in the real world:

First, it depressed world prices for most of these commodities. This worked against new investment in mines, mills and factories. And few firms were hiring and training new workers.
Second, the selloff forced many former producers out of business. Think about it. When you are competing against government sales from a stockpile, how can you afford to keep running a mine, or mill, or processing factory? So the mines closed. The mills closed. The factories shut down. The skilled employees moved on to other jobs.
And guess what? Here in the year 2008, we are now witnessing worldwide shortages of many of these critical metals and minerals. So prices for almost all of these strategic goods are climbing. And as I just noted above, the mines are closed. The mills are shut down. The factories are shuttered. The workforce has moved away. So what happens now?

Well, the very few companies that are still in the business of producing critical and strategic materials will profit handsomely going forward. I recently recommended the shares of a beryllium producer. [Editor's note: Out of deference to the subscribers of "The Energy & Scarcity Investor," Byron cannot divulge the name of this company]. Beryllium is critical to high tech, aerospace, the nuclear industry, medical imaging and numerous other advanced industries. And demand for this critical medal is growing. Just look at what's happening in the aviation and aerospace industries, which are both major beryllium consumers.

The order books of Boeing and Airbus are filled through the next decade. (Have you tried to buy a B-787 Dreamliner lately? The line is sold out to 2017.) And governments all over the world are getting into the business of launching rockets and orbiting satellites.

Meanwhile, as the developing world builds out its capital base, one of the things that citizens of other nations demand is better medical treatment. Much of modern medicine is predicated on exotic machines like CT and MRI scanners, and these devices use beryllium metal.

But beryllium is only one of the strategic metals in relatively short supply. There are others, and I've been keeping a close eye on them, as well as a close eye on the companies that produce them. I am on the prowl for companies that mine and process other critical elements on the periodic table as well. Some of these items are truly in shortage.

The end of the strategic stockpile will be providing some astonishing new investment opportunities.

Industrial Info Resources
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA--(Marketwire - March 14, 2008) - Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- At a time when major South African industrial and commercial electrical power consumers are in talks with independent power project and packaged power set promoters to bridge immediate supply shortages, the country's power utility Eskom (Johannesburg) is moving ahead with its large midterm and long-term project plans. Supply to key industries has crept up to 95% of normal demand, but companies are living under tight margins as witnessed by BHP Billiton (NYSE:BHP) (Melbourne, Australia) planning for the possible close-down of two pot lines at one of its aluminum smelters.

ATW to Acquire Gullewa Gold Mine

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 13, 2008) - ATW Venture Corp. (TSX VENTURE:ATW)(FRANKFURT:A3N), ("ATW" or "the Company"), is pleased to announce that it has entered into a Letter of Intent ("LOI") to acquire 100% of the Gullewa Gold Copper Project and its assets (the "Gullewa Project") located in the West Yilgarn goldfields of Western Australia, 300km south west of ATW's 100% owned Burnakura Gold Mine.

The Gullewa Project includes a total of 756 km2 of mineral tenements that cover the prospective central and southern portions of the Gullewa Greenstone Belt and include the Gullewa Mining Centre, the Deflector Deposit, the Prince George Mine, the Michaelangelo and Monarch Prospects.

Mining infrastructure assets of the Gullewa Project include a turn-key gold operation with a Carbon-In-Leach plant capable of up to 300,000 tpa (tonne per annum) gold production, a licensed tailings disposal facility, a 50-person camp, offices, workshops, bore fields and haulage roads. The site is currently on care and maintenance.

The vendor of the Gullewa Project is Batavia Mining Limited (ASX Listed: "BTV") (the "Vendor" or "Batavia"). Batavia is retaining the Rock Steady and Brandy Hill iron ore deposits which lie within two of the mineral tenements comprising the Gullewa Project.

PROJECT, LOCATION AND GEOLOGICAL INFORMATION

The Gullewa Project is located 450 km north of Perth, 160 km east of Geraldton and 300km south west of ATW's 100% owned Burnakura Gold Mine in the Yilgarn goldfields of Western Australia.

Batavia has disclosed, on its website, www.bataviamining.com.au, and in disclosure documents prepared for the ASX, geological information and JORC resource calculations for the Gullewa Project's Deflector Deposit.

The acquisition of the Gullewa Project is subject to its acceptance for filing with the TSX-Venture Exchange and preparation of an NI 43-101 compliant geological report.

The acquisition of the Gullewa Project is also subject to approval of Batavia's shareholders.

TERMS OF THE LETTER OF INTENT

The terms of the LOI require the parties to enter into a Definitive Agreement within thirty (30) days or the LOI will terminate.

The LOI states that the Definitive Agreement shall provide for the payment and/or issuance, by ATW Venture Australia Pty Ltd. (ATW's Australian subsidiary) to Batavia, of a total of AUD$13,000,000 and 2,000,000 shares of ATW as follows:

(a) within fourteen (14) days of the date of the acceptance for filing of the Definitive Agreement with the TSX-Venture Exchange and the completion of an NI 43-101 geological report concerning the Gullewa Project, AUD$3,000,000 (the "First Payment") and 2,000,000 shares of ATW Venture Corp.;

(b) on or before the twelve (12) month anniversary of the First Payment being made to Batavia, AUD$3,000,000 (the "Second Payment");

(c) on or before the twenty four (24) month anniversary of the First Payment being made to Batavia, AUD$3,000,000 (the "Third Payment"); and

(d) on or before the earlier of the thirty six (36) month anniversary of the First Payment being made to Batavia or the completion of a positive bankable feasibility study by ATW, AUD$4,000,000 (the "Fourth Payment").

(the payments (the "Payments") in sections 2(a) to (d) to be referred to, collectively, as the "Purchase Price").

Provided that the market price of the shares of ATW is greater than or equal to Cdn$1.00, Batavia may, at its election, choose to:

(a) be paid in shares of ATW for up to AUD$3,000,000 of the Second Payment at the market price of the shares of ATW at the time of the Second Payment;

(b) be paid in shares of ATW for up to AUD$3,000,000 of the Third Payment at the market price of the shares of ATW at the time of the Third Payment; and

(c) be paid in shares of ATW for up to AUD$4,000,000 of the Fourth Payment at the market price of the shares of ATW at the time of the Fourth Payment.

The acquisition of the Gullewa Project will, in the Definitive Agreement, be conditional upon ATW agreeing to provide to Batavia a non-refundable payment (the "Exploration Payment"), payable within thirty (30) days of the date hereof, of AUD$300,000 on the purchase of the Gullewa Project which Batavia agrees to use to engage in a regional exploration program (the "Program") on the area of the Gullewa Project. Payment of the Exploration Payment is conditional upon ATW first approving the Program. The Exploration Payment is made in addition to the AUD$13,000,000 of Payments described above.

Geophysical exploration, utilizing gravity and aeromagnetic surveying, has proven effective at Gullewa, the Deflector Deposit being discovered from drill testing an aeromagnetic target. Given the vast size of the mineral tenement package and the existence of other geologic prospects on the property, the Exploration Payment will fund a gravity geophysical survey during the second quarter of 2008.

Transfer to ATW of the assets comprising the Gullewa Project is to occur upon payment of the First Payment of AUD$3,000,000 and the issuance of the 2,000,000 shares of ATW. In the event that ATW does not make any of the Payments above, then its must transfer title to the Gullewa Project and assets back to Batavia. Until the Payments are all made to complete the Purchase Price, Batavia retains a security interest in the assets comprising the Gullewa Project.

"We are excited about acquiring the Gullewa Project," says Brent Butler, President and CEO. "These assets move us closer to our corporate goal of becoming a mid-tier gold producer."

ATW - warum nur gibt Bavaria das Ding her? :gruebel:

Hi Fischlaender,

CUERVO AVERAGES 54.05% Fe IN TEN NEW HOLES AT CERRO CCOPANE IRON PROJECT IN PERÚ ; INITIATES NI 43-101 REPORTING ON ORCOPURA ZONE

March 18, 2008 – Toronto, ON

Cuervo Resources Inc. (CNQ-IRON; FWB-CRR; “Cuervo” or the “Company”) reports the results from ten new holes on its Cerro Ccopane iron ore project in southern Perú. These latest results have a weighted average iron content of 54.05% Fe over 433.90 m of sampling and include intersections of 59.39% Fe over 72.60 m in ODH – 51 and 54.85% Fe over 76.60 m in ODH – 55. These results, along with those from the 48 holes previously reported on, provide further confirmation of the consistent high values of iron mineralization in the Orcopura zone and indicate that mineralization persists over a strike length of at least 750 meters. The Orcopura zone, which is now believed to be entering the advanced stage of preliminary exploration and geological definition, is one of five zones identified on the wholly owned Cerro Ccopane property.

The Company also reports that it has initiated the preparation of an NI 43-101-compliant report on the Orcopura zone of mineralization. This study will summarize the available drill results and related geological and geophysical data as a precursor to a similarly compliant resource estimate. This report is expected to be completed by May of 2008 with a resource study expected to be completed in June of 2008.

TECHNICAL RESULTS

Three diamond drills are operating on the property. Previous results were announced in press releases dated October 22nd, October 30th, November 1st, November 15th and December 6th 2007 and January 15th, February 5th and February 12th 2008 and included intersections of up to 57.31% Fe over 131.25 m (ODH – 01) and 41.29% Fe over 356.50 m (ODH – 33).

All drill holes were logged and sampled at the property campsite on the property under the direction of Minera Cuervo’s senior geologist, ing. Abraham Castillo Ll. A nominal sampling interval of 1.5 m is currently being used within sections of typical iron mineralization. Analyses were performed by SGS Minerals Services at their laboratory facilities in Lima (Callao), Perú. The reported Iron (Fe) analyses were determined by titration methods, sulphur (S) was carried out with a LECO furnace. All other reported analyses, which include phosphorus (P), manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu), were by performed ICP-AES after a multi-acid (“total”) digestion. Laboratory check analyses were performed on approximately 10% of the samples submitted while field duplicate samples are submitted on a rate of approximately 5% of the total samples sent to the laboratory. The Company is satisfied with the reproducibility of analyses for the elements reported. A sample preparation facility is also under construction at the Company’s exploration camp at Orcopura.

Fancamp Exploration Ltd.: McFauld's Lake Update
Thursday February 28, 10:09 am ET

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 28, 2008) - Fancamp Exploration Ltd. (TSX VENTURE:FNC - News). The following is an update for the Fancamp McFauld's project. Attached are the total field mag and the conductor interpretation maps arising from the November, 2007 Aerotem II survey. It should be emphasized that these are preliminary returns only, and are subject to adjustment and correction. However, they do indicate the major targets of interest.

With reference to the conductor interpretation map, #1-1 is Noront's Eagle 1 discovery, 1-2, 1-5, 1-6 and 1-7 are all Noront conductors. 1-4, 1-3, 1-11 and 1-10 represent Fancamp conductors, the latter shared with Freewest. The red dots - EM profile anomalies, represent conductivity, the exact nature of which has yet to be ascertained.

The total field magnetic map clearly shows the relationship of the large conductive magnetic feature on Fancamp's ground with the Eagle 1 discovery, which itself could be considered an extension in this large complex feeder zone. A particularly interesting target is the very strong magnetic feature located in the upper Fancamp block. This lies about 4 km NE of the Eagle 1 discovery and although the Aerotem II system shows little conductivity, the possibility of deeply buried, undetected conductors would seem to be good.

Currently, Fancamp and Noront are carrying out pulse EM surveys on targets 1-2, 1-3 and 1-4. These results should be available within a few weeks, following which drill targets will be selected. The Company hopes to be drilling by the end of March.

antwort von rochester auf die frage wieso der ceo letzte woche fleissig aktien verkauft hat.
antwort kam sehr schnell!

Hello Carlo,

The shares traded by Dr. Alfredo Parra was a cross with Sprott Asset
Management. The only way we were able to position Sprott was through a
cross and financing was not an option. Dr. Parra is the largest
shareholder of Rochester and if you go through his trading history he is not
one to sell off shares. This was done out of the company's best interest.
There is a fine balance between keeping your share dilution down and
bringing in the right institutions. Dr. Parra is the #1 believer of
Rochester and plans to develop this into a mid-tier company. He has
developed this from grass roots to a producing mine with the potential of
more mines to come. I have never met someone more passionate about their
business than Dr. Parra. He is in for the long term.

Jeff
